What Exactly Is Astrology?

Everyone has heard of it. But what exactly is astrology, and is it a subject worth studying? Is it a true science or just a long running fraud?

Astrology is a subject that has been studied for thousands of years in all parts of the world. It is based on the idea that by studying the positions in the sky of certain constellations of stars, it is possible to predict events here on earth.

Many people believe that astrology is a false science and a fraud. If they are right in saying that, then it is indeed very remarkable how astrology could have lasted for such a long time, even into our own age. This fact alone suggests that astrology cannot be lightly dismissed.

We said that it is is based on the positions of constellations, but it would be more accurate to say it is based on the study of which ever planet, including the Sun, is in a particular constellation at any given time. Of course, the planets are not IN the constellation. We are talking about the APPARENT position of the heavenly bodies as, from the point of view of the observer on earth, they appear to move across the sky. The reason they appear to move in relation to the stars is that they are relatively close to us while the stars are almost unimaginably far away. The ancients believed that the stars were fixed in place.

Because the planets of the solar system are arranged in more or less the same plane in space around the Sun, this means that from earth, they all appear to travel along a line or band across the sky. This band is called the ecliptic. It is this ecliptic area that contains those constellations that give their names to the 12 signs of astrology, collectively called the signs of the Zodiac. The names of the constellations were originally given as a fanciful way of describing what they looked like.

The 12 signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. In its apparent motion across the sky, the Sun enters each of these constellations once a year and stays there for a month before moving on to the next one. Most people know what their star sign is, even if they do not believe in astrology. The star sign of a person is actually the constellation that the Sun was occupying on the day that they were born. Astrologers believe that the Sun sign, as it is called, gives a general indication of someone's personality type. For many people, this is all they know of astrology.

If it was that simple however, astrology would never have got off the ground. It would be absurd to say that there are only 12 types of people. The Sun sign gives only a broad indication. It is the unique positions of the other planets that astrologers believe reflects the infinite variety of different people that are living on earth. Note that astrologers do NOT believe the stars or planets control a person, but that they reflect, in some way, their personality.

The planets that are used as indicators in astrology are those that were known to the ancient world. They are Mercury, Venus, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The planet Neptune was not discovered until 1781 by William Herschel, however many astrologers include Neptune in their calculations. Some have even included the planet Pluto, which was only discovered in 1930, although others believe that it is too small and far away to be of much influence. Interestingly, there have recently been moves among the scientific community to demote Pluto from its planetary status.

Studied and used worldwide for thousands of years, Astrology is the study of the interactions among the Stars and the Planets, based on very complicated mathematical cycles.

Astrological records date back to Babylon, 1645 BC, and the earliest horoscope to 410 BC. Astrology's origins can be traced to many locations and cultures, including Egypt, which developed sophisticated timekeeping and calendar science; Greece, where Ptolemy wrote influential astrological and astronomical texts; and Rome, where many of the most learned men, including two emperors-were astrologers who fought wars, formulated laws and counseled citizens based on interpretations of The Stars.

During the Renaissance, when literacy became more widespread, almanacs published astrological information for public distribution. Several notable figures of the era, including Galileo and Copernicus, were both practicing astrologers and founders of the modern scientific movement. Despite the seemingly easy relationship between Astrology and science, however, Astrology began to lose popular credibility when myriad predictions about the great conjunction of 1524 failed to "come true."

As the Scientific Revolution surged and astronomy gained respect, Astrology and many other arts fell by the wayside. Many individuals still practiced, however, and Astrology enjoyed small a small following in England in the 1700s and 1800s. But it wasn't until the birth of Princess Margaret in 1930 that Astrology once again found widespread popularity. That year, the London Sunday Express ran an astrological profile of the princess to celebrate her birth-and so began the modern newspaper horoscope column.

In the 1950s, French astrologers Michel and Françoise Gauquelin used sophisticated statistical studies to link the positions of the Planets to human nature. Others, such as Dane Rudhyar, have expanded the study of Humanistic Astrology.

Can I Become an Astrologer?

In the ancient times, a strict code of conduct was demanded of those who practised astrology. A guru would teach astrology only to a deserving disciple who would adhere to such a code of conduct. The guru-shishya (i.e. teacher-disciple) tradition is already long over in India. With changing times, it has become difficult to find an appropriate ‘guru’ and a deserving ‘shishya’ to pursue this sacred study within the rules laid by the sages of yore. It is, however, quite in order to be aware of this ancient code of conduct. Varahamihira, the celebrated authority on astrology, prescribes the following qualifications for an astrologer.

Physical features: According to the said author, the physical feature reflects the inner nature of a man. The astrologer must be good to look at, with all his body parts complete and healthy. He should be of sound health, with sound hands, feet, nails, chin, teeth, ears, forehead and head, and heaving a loud and impressive voice.

Moral soundness: He should be truthful, gentle, bereft of cravings and aversions clean of heart, not inclined to be critical of the qualities of others, and devoid of base and worldly distractions.

Behaviour in an assembly: He should be clever, able to express himself, bold in an assembly, not intimidated by his fellow astrologers, dignified, and aware of the constraints of social and historical circumstances.

Proficiency in the subject of astrology: He should be well read, and proficient in the three branches of astrology known as the Ganita, the Samhita and the Hora. He must have studied the five Siddhantas (or mathematical treatises). His mathematical proficiency must include knowledge of the various divisions of time, from the gross ones like the Yuga to the finer ones. He must also possess knowledge of the various divisions, including the finest ones, of the zodiac.

Proficiency in various branches of astrology: The astrologer is required to possess a knowledge of different aspects of astrology which deal with propitiation of planets, rendering the planets beneficial or hostile, conducting religious ceremonies, and rituals which help neutralise the natural calamities.

Defence of astrology: The astrology must be able to answer queries, and also pose relevant questions where appropriate, when necessary, he should be able to dazzle others by his knowledge, only to increase the dignity of astrology.

More about the qualities of an astrologer: The astrologer must possess knowledge of solar, civil, nakshatric and lunar time measures; of intercalary months; of the sixty Samvatsaras, the yugas, years, months, days and Horas; of varying opinions on varying aspects of mathematical astronomy; of various dispositions of planets, including their exaltations, debilitations, fast and slow motions, there conjunctions as well as planetary warfares; of latitudes and longitude of places on the surface of the earth; of the movements of the Nakshatras; of the rising and setting of signs, Charakhandas for different latitudes, etc. He should be highly confidant and a clear expounder of the Shastras.

The sage Parashara advocates a similar code of conduct for astrologers, stressing particularly on the necessity for technical, intellectual and moral excellence; the capacity to weigh the pros and cons of a situation, along with an ability to synthesise a coherent prediction based on a sound knowledge of the principles, sometimes apparently contradictory, of astrology.

The wonder of astrology these days is that there is so much in the Western and Chinese varieties: natal, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, relationship, compatibility, love, career, pets, etc. And each of these readings can assist us. Recognizing oneself in the signs, planets, houses and aspects is a great feeling. For example, one thing about me is that I avoid housework at all costs. When my natal astrology chart was done, it said that I have almost no earth and "have trouble with everyday tasks." While this information hasn't made cleaning any less difficult, it has helped me to understand myself and feel better about this part of my personality. What a gift!

Face Reading: Several years ago, one of my friends read my face. She not only examined and measured different aspects of my face, but my head. These bumps, spaces, curves and other unique parts have meaning! Face Reading encompasses the reading of expressions and physiognomy, the determination of a person's traits by aspects of their face and its structure. My friend had studied personology, which was developed by a judge, and she had been a successful jury selector. Long story short, I experienced a very cool reading that taught me things that other readings hadn't, like the fact that my rounded forehead was an indication of original thought and creativity. At the time, I was a graphics designer, which fit this trait perfectly.

Numerology Reading: Numerology is a wonderful science that I've read about and I've also received personalized numerology reports, which were very detailed and interesting. One number that is determined in these readings is the Life Path number, which is based on the date of birth and is much like the external energy of a person's life. The energy of the person and who they are within these external happenings is indicated by the full name at birth. Forecasts can also be made from the numbers, and from the relationship between those numbers and the current date and name. My personal experience was that reading the prepared reports was eye-opening and complex in a good way, like I would be able to continue reading the reports and gain new insight each time.

Psychic Reading: I have more personal experience and education regarding psychic readings than with any other type. My numerous readings have been varied, most in person and some by phone, and include aura, past life, couple, family, rose, music, female, chakra and others. Some psychic readings have simply been asking a question of one or more readers and getting answers. Others have been focused on a particular aspect of me, such as being female. In the female readings I've received, the reader clairvoyantly looked at me as a spirit at that moment, and how much I wanted children, how much I owned my body, the lies I've been programmed with about being female, past lives when I was female and so on. More than once I discovered that the way I had been feeling, a strange something I just couldn't shake off, was not even my energy! And many times the reader was trained in psychic healing as well, and could help me let go of the energy and begin assisting me with the accompanying issue. The female and other type psychic readings I've received have given so much validation to me and my journey as a spiritual being. I highly recommend them.

Tarot Reading: There was one point in my life when I got many tarot readings. Now I usually get the ones using three cards, but then I went to a reader who did the larger spreads. I believe she used the Rider-Waite deck, but there are many decks to choose from. These readings were always encouraging and invigorating, filled with possibilities of what I could create in my life, and I enjoyed them. I have used the Inner Child deck for myself, which is fun. I believe that with tarot, as in all readings, it is interpretation that counts.

Those are the types of readings I am familiar with and know are available. There are, of course, other forms of divination such as the I Ching and Runes. Many people think that a reading all comes down to the reader, but we as "readees" are not without responsibility. Still, that's for another article. Human beings know when they need some assistance and guidance, and I believe that getting a reading is one of the most helpful and enlightening experiences we can have. And let's not forget the fact that they're entertaining!

Reading tarot cards is a pastime that has been done centuries ago, which determines possible outcomes and predictions of the future. A tarot deck can come in different themes but is basically made up of the twenty-two major arcana cards and the fifty six minor arcana. Commonly used spreads include the Celtic spread, the horseshoe spread, 3-card spread, 1-card spread, the astrological spread, and the teractycs wherein ten cards are arranged in a four-rowed pyramid. There are many other spreads aside from these which the tarot reader can use and arrange his cards the way he sees it fit.

Tarot reading is done to answer questions about anything to do with the person. Whether it would be about love or the future, the cards will either tell you directly the answer or give you a situation which discreetly answers the question. Some tarot decks require you to delve yourself into a spiritual aura and perform certain rituals in order to get an accurate reading. For my Pythagorean deck, the cards need to always be purified by the moonlight, arranged and placed in an acceptable box or bag to keep bad spirits from affecting the cards, and to offer praise to the gods in order to be able to read the tarot spread correctly and accurately. Reading tarot cards doesn't necessarily mean denouncing your faith or anything of the sort, but a way to know what may be in store for you just as Chinese and love horoscopes do.

Tarot cards can also be used for other purposes. During the 16th century in Europe, tarot cards were used to compose poetry, also called "tarocchi appropriate", to describe ladies of the court. Psychologists also use tarot cards in representing archetypes or are interpreted as pictorial representations of human development from infancy to adulthood. Some occult schools that specialize in symbolic study use tarot cards as a textbook in their teachings as well. Reading tarot cards does not only have to be for predictions or answering questions regarding future instances, but can also be a way of understanding human beings in general and the way things act and react in this world.

Reading tarot cards can be done if you're dedicated in learning the basic interpretations of each card. Though it may take some practice and a few trials, reading tarot cards can enhance your ability in interpretation and analysis in certain trivial circumstances.

If you are knowledgeable about astrology or can ask someone who is to help you, following the current positions of the planets can significantly boost your productivity. An ephemeris-that is, a table of the planets' daily positions-is a writing tool with even more muscle than a thesaurus!

FOLLOW THE DAILY MOON SIGNS: In general, writing should go well while the Moon is in Gemini each month or during the month or so each year that the Sun, Venus, and Mercury are in that sign (usually late May and most of June). You can follow these periods on a calendar that includes astrological information or by subscribing to an astrology magazine. The Moon or inner planets in Virgo are good windows for editing your work. If you write consistently and follow the planets as you do, you will doubtlessly discover which Moon signs and transits are most productive for you-the periods when you work most effortlessly and effectively-based on your own personal chart. Watch for those intervals, block off the time, and use it to the hilt.

CAPITALIZE ON MERCURY RETROGRADE PERIODS: Mercury represents all communication media, and Mercury retrograde has a bad press in popular astrology venues. To avoid the snafus popularly associated with Mercury retrograde, be certain to make copies of everything you write and regularly back up the disk. However, in my years as a writer, I have learned to make productive use of the three spans of time each year that Mercury is retrograde for about 20-25 days each. Capitalizing on the natural backward and forward rhythm of Mercury's movements can be useful to a writer. In the course of writing a book over a year or more, use these intervals to go over and refine what you've already written, rather than waiting until the end, when you are mentally exhausted, fed up with the subject and yearning to be finished.

FOLLOW YOUR CHART FOR GOOD WINDOWS: If you are advanced in astrological studies, watch the Moon as it travels through your own chart and note which signs and houses seem to correspond with your own most inspired and lucid times. Block those times off on your calendar for writing. Similarly, observe the passage of the faster moving planets, especially Mercury, through the various houses and signs to see which are most productive and then use them more consciously. For instance, schedule your annual vacation or long weekends during peak times, and get away to a quiet place if need be.

Using Astrology to Save Astronauts' Lives

Millions of astrologers around the world know that Saturn brings limitations and Jupiter brings success. Uranus brings technological advancements. (trines & sextiles are good, squares & oppositions are bad, conjunctions vary with planets). Just have a look at some of the following dates:-

4th Oct 1957: Sun and Jupiter sextile Uranus.
Sputnik I launched successfully.

3rd Nov 1957: Sun square Uranus
Sputnik II launched successfully but the dog, Laika, died after a week in orbit.

12th Apr 1961: Sun and Venus trine Uranus
First human in space, Yuri Gargarin, launches successfully.

20 Feb 1962: Sun having just opposed Uranus
Successful but there was an unexpected electronic malfunction with the heat shield warning system (Uranus rules electrical equipment).

15 May 1963: The exception: Sun square Saturn
Several things went wrong with the Project Gemini trip.
Gordon Cooper's space-suit persistently overheated.
The water supply system failed.
He felt dehydrated and dizzy.

The automatic steering refused to work and had to be operated manually.
(Note: These are all typical Saturn-related problems!)

22 Jul 1969: Jupiter exactly conjunct Uranus: First humans on the Moon
Mission successful, a giant leap for mankind. Is this beginning to form a pattern?

So, the lesson seems to be to attempt rocket launches when Uranus is favorably aspected to give the expedition the maximum chance of success.

UPDATE: August 31, 2003.

Last week, Jupiter opposed Uranus. Brazil chose August 22 (the timing is quite uncanny) to launch its third attempt at becoming a "space nation". Mars was conjoining Uranus during that week, making this period even more volatile. Definitely not a good time to be pushing the frontiers of science. The rocket exploded on Friday at a jungle base of Alcantara, in the northeastern state of Maranhao, after an engine ignited by mistake. 21 people were killed.

UPDATE: May 11, 2006.

One launch that did not seem to be avoidable was the explosion of the Challenger on January 28, 1986. The planetary aspects between themselves on that fateful day did not reveal much about the intensity of the event that was to take place. I've only recently become aware that the warning took place in the American birthchart itself. Pluto was square the American Node, but again, for technological advancement pointers we look primarily at the position of Uranus. On that day, Uranus at 20 Sag 57 was within half a degree of squaring to the American Mars at 21 Gemini 23. Uranus and Mars in bad aspect are very often involved when bad accidents occur. So, it seems that an extension to the rule is that there should be no close, hard aspects to the birthchart of the country concerned, especially those involving Uranus.

Theory to improve the success rate of Space Launches.

1. Establish the launch window-period and the proposed launch date.
2. Check that there are no hard squares and oppositions to or from Uranus in the daily planet configurations on this day, especially ones involving Jupiter and Mars.
3. Check that there are no hard squares and oppositions, especially from Uranus and Mars, to the birthchart of the country.
4. If there are hard aspects, look for another day within the period.
5. If these rules cannot be satisfied during this period, find another that does.

Scientists, we need you and you need us. Please get off your butts and take a closer look at Uranus. I know you think you have defined "nearly everything", but when you start looking under the hood you will realise that you are not even close. By the way, Jupiter next conjuncts Uranus around June 7, 2010 (last conjunction Jan 4, 2011). You can expect an exciting discovery or event around that time. I'm betting on scientists, at their best, finding proof of the existence of life elsewhere in the galaxy by that time, or at least man landing successfully on another planet or one of it's moons.

Please feel free to have a good laugh at me (preferably publicly). Nobody ever perfected anything the first few times. I don't have to remind you how The New York Times and other media ridiculed Robert Goddard in the 1920's. Gut-wrenching, belly laughter as his first liquid-propellant rockets rose a few metres and crashed back into his Aunt Effie's vegetable patch. How he was banned from testing his rockets because of complaints about the noise and forced to test them in Roswell, New Mexico at his own (and Charles Lindbergh's) expense.

UPDATE Aug 2006: Around mid-month, Jupiter started to move in to a trine (120 degree) position to Uranus. I made a point of taking note of the technological advancements that were sure to arise during this period. Here are some of them:

Tues, Aug 11: Gregory Perelman hailed as one of the greatest minds on the planet, after solving the century-old mathematical riddle, the Poincare Conjecture.

Thur, Aug 13: Scientists announced a breakthrough (typical Jup/Ura) in stem cell research, now requiring only a single cell from a 3-day old embryo to grow stem cells.

London: It emerged this week that scientists have found indications of life-forms in a meteorite from the Red Planet. Tiny tunnels in the rock are believed to have been bored by micro-organisms.

UPDATE Sep 2006: The launch of the Atlantis shuttle is scheduled to take place before September 7. At that stage Jupiter will still be within a 1.5 degrees of trining Uranus. This broad horary alignment will pretty much assure a successful mission. - (Glad to report in hindsight that there were no problems).

Scorpio, Libra, and Virgo Might Be Connected to the Ancients Judgment Scenes - Egyptian Astrology

The history which we use today in our modern astrology reports actually descends from the Greeks interpretation of the Egyptians belief and other older societies.

I have the suspicion that the judgment scene especially from ancient Egypt is probably connected to the three zodiac signs called; Scorpio, and Libra, and Virgo.

These three signs are not so easy to interpret, there seems to be much more to them than meets the eye. In the ancient days of the Egyptians and other older cultures, they did not entirely use our modern version of the zodiac, even thou they were the creators of it. Actually the same Ptolemy family line which helped to write the New Testament also changed the zodiac very much from the old Egyptians conceptions of the heavens, especially the visual one.

Libra the Claw of Scorpio

Back in ancient days, Scorpio and Libra were actually one constellation. Libra is the claws of Scorpio, and the Scorpions heart is more important than its physical being. Libra is an empty space of unimportant stars and more, but though its reach to Virgos hand, it glows of justice. The part which you have just read, simply means; That the ancient people adored the "Heart of Scorpio," which is the star 'Antares'. Libra becomes an instrument of justice through the hand of Virgo, which is the star 'Spica.'

Even thou I like to read about the ancient cultures, I find myself equally drawn to the real astronomic constellations and their real existences. I have tried to make some small video clips which illustrate how the constellations have changes in their visual look through the centuries.

Manifestation Signs - It's Working!

When working to manifest a specific desire, there will almost always be "signs" that the universe has received your request. It's like the confirmation email you get after placing an order online: "We received your order and it's in process. We'll email again when we ship it."

However, the "signs" that come with manifestation efforts usually aren't quite so obvious. But with practice you can learn to recognize and decipher these subtle messages and use them to strengthen your faith and stay aligned with the formation of your desires.

If you've never received any of these signs, you may be wondering what I'm talking about. So let's use an example to show how it usually works.

Imagine that you wanted to manifest a new vehicle, a Ford Mustang. You've put together all the details in your mind and it's so real you can almost feel yourself sitting in the driver's seat. You can smell the leather interior and the wind in your hair as you joyfully drive your new toy. You write out all the details that you want this car to have, and you submit your desire to the universe. You can just FEEL that it's working already; you KNOW this car will be yours.

Over the next few days, you start seeing Mustangs wherever you go. New ones, old ones, all different kinds of Mustangs. You excitedly affirm that soon you will be driving one too! A few more days pass, and you start seeing lots of references to horses. You're seeing them online, in books and magazines, on TV...horses everywhere! (Get it? Horse, mustang...)

This continues for a couple of weeks, but now you're starting to get frustrated. Where is your car?! You've been doing all the right things, staying positive, believing with all your heart that it's coming, but it's not coming. You start to doubt. And you start seeing less and less signs. When you do see a Mustang, you feel jealous of the owner. How come HE can have a Mustang but you can't? It's just not fair. You begin focusing more on the lack of having a Mustang, rather than actually having one.

If you continue in this state of mind, you'll kill your manifestation before it can fully form and be delivered!

This is just an example but it clearly shows how a person can be building great energy, receiving feedback from the universe, and then swinging their focus to a place of lack - which ensures their desire will not be delivered.

Have you done this before? I have. Until I learned to recognize that those "signs" were not just wishful thinking or coincidence. They were personalized messages that I was on the right track and my manifestations were working!

The universe will also sometimes send you little reminders to help you stay on track with your manifestation. Like one day I was feeling kind of depressed that one of my desires hadn't manifested yet, and a car drove past me with a license plate that read BHAPPY. Instantly I felt like the universe was saying, "Hey, you can't manifest anything good from a negative state of mind!" I knew that, but I needed the reminder. So I purposely focused on happier thoughts to move myself back into alignment. (And yes, the desire was fulfilled not too long after that.)

Your signs may be different than the examples I've shared here, but you will always recognize them because they will grab your attention in a strong way. You'll FEEL like it's a personal message to you, not just a coincidence. And it will usually come at the perfect time, just when you need it most.

The month of September is a very auspicious time in the Numerological calendar when the a number amplifies with interesting results. Read on to discover more.

September in any year is very important in Numerology as like school terms it's (in some ways) the start of a new year.

As a Numerologist, I still wait until January to say that a new year has truly begun, but I believe that some vibration of the following year starts to have an effect from the September before.

The cross-over date specifically is September the 9th, when universally the world is on the same number Day, Month & Year.

For example - this year September the 9th is a 1 Day, on a 1 Month of a 1 Year.

This is worked out by the following methods:

Year- Universally 2008 is a 1 Year.

2+0+0+8= 10/1+0=1

Making September a 1 Year.

Month- As we're already on a Universal 1 year, this makes January a 2 month, February a 3 month etc....all the way through to September being a 1 Month.

Day- 9 (day) + 1(September is a 1 month this year) = 10/1+0=1 making September the 9th a 1 Day.

So as you now (hopefully) understand why September the 9th is a 1 day, of a 1 month on a 1 year. I will now explain why it is so auspicious.

The number 1 relates to movement, change, new beginnings, originality, invention, innovative ideas and the self.

Universally, the whole of September will be an excellent time for all of these things.

Of course, nothing is ever handed to anyone on a plate so the number 1 requires us to take the first nervous step in whatever direction we'd like to go, first. Then, once the Universe is aware that we've taken the initiative it will continue to support us in our endeavors.

On the market today individuals have access to a variety of vedic books where they can learn from the ancient studies that have been taught for thousands of years. Throughout your childhood there may have been several traumatizing experiences or traumatizing set backs that as a child may have placed set within the back of their mind in hopes of forgetting. The Tarot - Learning From a Recent Workshop

A pagan gathering is a good place to run a Tarot workshop; the participants usually understand what the tarot is and what it can do. Ania and I had a really good attendance - around 30 people crammed into a medieval tent in a field! - so Ania began by asking how many people had tarot decks. The majority of people did and most had some idea of tarot card meanings. The numbers dipped slightly when Ania asked how many had used them to read for themselves, and dropped (substantially) again to the question of how many had used them with others. Lack of confidence is always an issue with the Tarot; and there's also the issue of learning at least 78 meanings - more, if you use reversals.

One person said her main problem was how each card was affected by the others around it. This was something that worried me when I was learning. But somehow, after a while, you do begin to see how they work. Using spreads - as we usually do - each card has its specific meaning modified by the position. For example, if you found the Eight of Swords in the position of 'central issue', and the Four of Pentacles (Discs) in the Environment position, you would probably say that the client is stuck with old ways of thinking or ideas of duty, and they need to cut the cords that bind them to those outdated views. The Four of Pentacles shows us that this is mainly about money, but also where they fit into their environment - perhaps they are holding on like grim death to ideas of money and security. The client has probably gone around and around this problem mentally (swords) but the combination of material security (discs) and their old issues have kept them stuck. As a foundation card, you then might find the Six of Cups (nostalgia, looking back) and know that they've previously had emotional issues about moving forward, and this has of course contributed to the issue. But if they approached the problem from a different point of view, they might realise they have actually moved on. And so you go on.

Tarot reading, as Ania pointed out, is really a combination of life skills, being able to read imagery, and intuitive knowledge. You really don't have to be psychic, just aware. I've met a number of psychic people who can't read tarot particularly well because the messages in their heads get in the way. On the other hand, you find words, images, or intuitive 'knowing' do start 'coming in' as soon as you begin to trust your own abilities. That seems to be the way with intuition - the more you trust it, the better it works.

The subject of which deck to use also came up. I would encourage people to choose their cards that best "speak to them", using a combination of feeling and intuition. There will be one deck that calls to you, and that will be the one you need to work with. (By the way many people have heard that you shouldn't buy tarot for yourself. This is superstition and quite counter-productive, in my view. At least if you buy them, you have an emotional, intuitive and material investment in them!)

I ended the workshop by giving on-the-spot one-card readings from the deck for anyone who asked - it is amazing to see this in practice. As always, it is a mystery how the cards work, but when you see how accurate even one card can be, you remember that the tarot itself is a mystery - and all the better for it.

What Exactly Is Astrology?

Astrology is a subject that has been studied for thousands of years in all parts of the world. It is based on the idea that by studying the positions in the sky of certain constellations of stars, it is possible to predict events here on earth.

Many people believe that astrology is a false science and a fraud. If they are right in saying that, then it is indeed very remarkable how astrology could have lasted for such a long time, even into our own age. This fact alone suggests that astrology cannot be lightly dismissed.

We said that it is is based on the positions of constellations, but it would be more accurate to say it is based on the study of which ever planet, including the Sun, is in a particular constellation at any given time. Of course, the planets are not IN the constellation. We are talking about the APPARENT position of the heavenly bodies as, from the point of view of the observer on earth, they appear to move across the sky. The reason they appear to move in relation to the stars is that they are relatively close to us while the stars are almost unimaginably far away. The ancients believed that the stars were fixed in place.

Because the planets of the solar system are arranged in more or less the same plane in space around the Sun, this means that from earth, they all appear to travel along a line or band across the sky. This band is called the ecliptic. It is this ecliptic area that contains those constellations that give their names to the 12 signs of astrology. The names of the constellations were originally given as a fanciful way of describing what they looked like.

The 12 signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. In its apparent motion across the sky, the Sun enters each of these constellations once a year and stays there for a month before moving on to the next one. Most people know what their star sign is, even if they do not believe in astrology. A person's star sign is actually the constellation that the Sun was occupying on the day that they were born. Astrologers believe that the Sun sign, as it is called, gives a general indication of someone's personality type. For many people, this is all they know of astrology.

If it was that simple however, astrology would never have got off the ground. It would be absurd to say that there are only 12 types of people. The Sun sign gives only a broad indication. It is the unique positions of the other planets that astrologers believe reflects the infinite variety of different people that are living on earth. Note that astrologers do NOT believe the stars or planets control a person, but that they reflect, in some way, their personality.

The planets that are used as indicators in astrology are those that were known to the ancient world. They are Mercury, Venus, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The planet Neptune was not discovered until 1781 by William Herschel, however many astrologers include Neptune in their calculations. Some have even included the planet Pluto, which was only discovered in 1930, although others believe that it is too small and far away to be of much influence. Interestingly, there have recently been moves among the scientific community to demote Pluto from its planetary status.

A correctly calculated chart of the sky for the date, time and location of a person's birth is the focal point of scientific astrology. This chart maps the life pattern of the person for whom it is calculated.

A Birth Chart (which is also known as a horoscope -- NOT to be confused with Sun Sign "horoscopes" found on line or in the daily newspapers) can be calculated for things other than people. There are Birth Charts of countries, cities and the weather, for answering questions and for selecting the best time to begin new projects. All charts, of whatever nature, are calculated using precise astronomical data. In other words, they are scientifically based.

There is much beauty and profound wisdom in classical scientific astrology -- beauty and wisdom based in the universal symbolism understood by the best minds throughout history.

It is not necessary to "believe" in astrology for it to work out in your life. In fact, the people who ignore it completely are the ones most likely to unconsciously follow its intrinsic patterns. Astrology does not predict exact or inevitable events -- rather it indicates the kind and quantity of energy you have in your personal bank account. The ecliptic is a broad band around the earth known as the zodiac and through which the sun, moon and planets weave a pattern unique to the particular moment of birth. There are 360 degrees in this zodiacal circle, divided into 12 signs of 30 degrees each. The 12 signs are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Signs are categorized by element and quality. i.e. fire signs, air signs, earth signs and water signs; active signs, stubborn signs and adaptable signs. We all know about astrology, or do we? Does it work, or not? And could it even be bad for your health? Here is a distinctively personal view...

Maybe I should start out by saying that I'm very far from being any kind of expert in the field of Astrology. I have no training in the subject either.

What I'm giving here is very much a personal view, although I feel bound to say that it is a view that's based on many years of personal experience.

My first encounters with astrology were during childhood when I used to hear people discussing the latest horoscopes in the newspapers. From the tone adopted by people who read them out to each other, it was easy to tell that they thought of the pronouncements of newspaper astrology as being absurd and unbelievable, to be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

Later, I noted that there was a type associated with each of the star signs. What star sign you were under played an important part in determining your character. Could this be true? Surely not. And yet, when people read what their character was supposed to be, it was extraordinary how many times it turned out to be quite an accurate character description. A possible explanation of this could be that the character traits were so vague one was able to fit them to any person. Another explanation is that as it became generally known what were the broad characteristics of those born under each sign, people would unconsciously adopt those characteristics. The self fulfilling prophecy.

Around this time, the musical Hair became famous and the public was exposed to the idea of astrology as some kind of mystical art.

I remember reading a book by Paul Foster Case about the Tarot cards, in which he relates the cards to the different signs of the Zodiac. I read that book over and over again, until I almost knew it by heart. It had a profound effect on much of my subsequent thinking, not always entirely for my benefit actually.

Then later again, I discovered the writings of the Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung, whose writings about astrology and his invention of the concept of synchronicity contributed greatly to the acceptance by the scientific world that the subject might have a claim to be considered as a science. However, despite the eminence of Jung himself, astrology continues to be on the fringes.

On the question of the broadness of the signs' characteristics, this is supposed to be addressed by the so called Rising Sign, the constellation that was rising at the moment a person was born. Since this changes approximately every two hours, it is very important to know the exact time of birth. I remember when my own daughter was born, even during the roller coaster of emotions accompanying the event, I recall that I managed to make a careful note of the time, for this very reason. And I even allowed for Daylight Saving! Such is the powerful influence that astrology has over us.

When I was going through my evangelical period, I read a fascinating book called What Your Horoscope Doesn't Tell You. I'm sorry but I cannot remember the name of the author. It was an attack on astrology from a reformed church Christian viewpoint, written by a man who had previously been a professional astrologer. What made it interesting was that he claimed that astrology works, and that this was bad!

Readers can decide for themselves, and believe whatever they want to believe.

How Astrology Can Help You Create the Kind of Marriage You Dream About

According to tradition, June is THE MONTH to get married, although how that tradition originated is anyone's guess. Some sources say it was the first month that water temperatures were warm enough for would-be brides to take their first after-winter bath! Others say it was because June was named after Juno, the goddess of love and marriage.

That's all well and good, but if you look more closely at Juno's marriage to Jupiter, you might want to think again -- Jupiter fooled around a lot while Juno stoically stood by her man, remaining faithful but taking her revenge on the "other women" rather than on him. Not the standard you want to model your marriage after, is it? But then again, mythology was a lo-o-o-ong time ago, or was it?

But whatever its origins, June has become firmly entrenched in our culture as "the ideal time" to plan a wedding. But what does astrology have to say about that month, and why is the timing of a marriage even a consideration? Let's look at that first ...

You were born on a certain day and, assuming that astrology has some influence over most people, you possess your own set of characteristics, many of which you may share in common with others born under your sign. This, of course, is true of your would-be spouse as well.

What we don't often consider is that anything "born" on a given day -- whether a pet, a business, a marriage, anything that has a definite beginning in time -- also has its own characteristics. The astrological influences bestow a set of qualities or energies to any new arrival in the world, which, from then on, has a life of its own. So when you get married, you are not only having to adjust and accommodate to your spouse, but you both are having to make adjustments to the requirements or influences of the marriage itself -- that third thing that binds you together and has its own life energy.

You can see how it becomes important to understand that the wedding -- actually the phrase "I now pronounce you husband and wife"-- marks the birth or the beginning of the marriage. From then on, it's not just "he and I" or "she and I" but both of you together within a larger context that will either be supportive of you or a trial to live with.

We've all heard of a great couple who fell apart after they got married. Looking at the wedding time can often reveal how incompatible their marriage energy was with both their energies, even though the two of them together worked well astrologically before they got married.

What does this mean for June weddings, or for marriages begun in any month? Let's start with June and go through the signs, exploring the energies and feelings of each one so that you might be able to identify what time period is more likely to give you the kind of marriage you dream about. (Oh, it would be good if you considered a date that your spouse-to-be also agrees with!)

Most of June falls into the sign of Gemini, which actually begins around the 21st of May and goes through the 21st of June. Dates that the signs change to the next sign are called "cusps" and can vary from the 20th to the 23rd of any given month. In general, these are not the best days to plan to have your wedding, as the energy is in transition from one sign to the next sign and therefore carries a certain amount of tension because of that changeover. I'd recommend that you not choose any dates from the 19th through the 24th, just to be safe.

As you read through the paragraphs about the nature of each sign, trust your feelings and how you are responding to the information rather than trying to do a mental analysis. The qualities you feel most comfortable with are the ones that will best suit you and your partner, and will make for a more harmonious marriage.

MAY 21 - JUNE 21. GEMINI, the Twins. The challenge of Gemini is for two to become one, for the polarities or dualities of life to reconcile and find unity, at least on a mental level. In and of itself, this task aptly describes the path of marriage and, for this reason, is a fitting sign under which to exchange vows, even though it is not an emotionally rich sign. On the down side, that reconciling of opposites often ends up in partners feeling more like brother and sister. This kind of compatibility may be welcome in later life, but not so much early on in the union. The resiliency which Gemini is known for, however, may help a couple remain successfully married as long as the channels of communication are kept open, which this Mercury-ruled sign requires.

JUNE 21 - JULY 23. CANCER, the Crab. Now we enter the archetypal "home and family" sign. Cancer makes up in emotion for what Gemini lacks. A marriage under this sign will bind family members together on a deep, subconscious level. Sometimes this could extend to possessive attachment, to the exclusion of non-family individuals and non-family values/religion/politics -- not the most tolerant sign when it comes to differences. A good sign for those whose ancestry and tradition are the most important things in life. JULY 23 - AUGUST 23. LEO, the Lion. In Leo the spotlight shifts to the children, the pride and joy of the family. Where Cancer may be introverted by nature, Leo can be extroverted. Entertaining may be a strong aspect of Leo marriages, as may the need for romance. This high-maintenance aspect of Leo is not tolerant of the taking-each-other-for-granted that spouses often fall into. When operating on its high side, Leo is generous and open-hearted, playful and sunny, like the Sun which rules it. The father in Leo marriages takes center stage.

AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 23. VIRGO, the Virgin. The complexities of Virgo may not be the easiest energy to live with, as marriage under this sign requires partners to live to high standards with little reward except that things are "done right." Under Virgo's rulership we find health, service, obedience and cooperation, along with precision and attention to detail. Surely a marriage doesn't get far without cooperation, but few couples may feel called to devote themselves and their marriage to service - whether to the community, country, religion or a cause. Teacher couples may do well here, as may health care professionals, engineers and clergy. But the critical-eyed aspect of Mercury through this sign might leave less selfless individuals feeling overly pressured, perhaps frustrated by this task-master energy.

SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23. LIBRA, the Scales. Ah, Libra, the archetypal marriage sign. "We" not "I" is how this energy operates, and relationship evolves to an art form. This is not the sign for strong-willed or self-centered individuals, as Libra seeks tranquillity, harmony and peace. The smoothly flowing back-and-forth exchange of thoughts, feelings and ideas keep the Libra marriage coals stoked. When bumps in the road come up, Libra is forgiving - but only up to a point. Too many transgressions and the gloves come off. Appreciation of art and beauty through its Venus rulership -- beauty both in nature and man-made -- make this an excellent marriage sign for those for whom "the other" is of primary importance and relationship in and of itself is vital for life. Seeing and bringing out the best in each other is part of the mutual appreciation that makes Libra unions last.

OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 22. SCORPIO, the Scorpion, the Eagle and the Phoenix. As private as Cancer may be, the energy of Scorpio can take introversion to an extreme. While this may not be a good sign for social and outgoing people to marry under, the emphasis on a strong sex life and money may be appealing to some. Nor is Scorpio for the faint-hearted, as all issues and qualities come under intense scrutiny to rival Virgo. When operating positively, marriage under this sign makes the partners feel exalted; when negative, it feels like the end of the world. The triple rulership describes the spectrum of Scorpio energy -- from scorpions who will sting themselves to death if no one else is around to inflict their venom on, to the eagle who can fly high and surmount earthly concerns, to the phoenix who rises from the ashes of its own death to soar to the sun. Tremendous power for transformation is potential in this sign, yet few outlets exist for releasing the pressures of life under this Mars-Pluto rulership. Intense individuals may be the only ones who can withstand this energy.

NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 22. SAGITTARIUS, the Archer. Pack your bags, because if you marry under Sagittarius, the wanderer, you may find yourself changing addresses or taking trips more than the average. If not traveling externally, the expansive influence of Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius will invite partners to broaden their mental and spiritual horizons with explorations into the new, the distant, and the mystical. Very outgoing and social, this sign feels like the opposite of Scorpio and enjoys nature, perhaps even sports, and values higher education and learning. An idealistic energy, Sagittarius, like Gemini, can bounce back quickly from troubles -- that is, if it hasn't taken off to some distant place already. This is a great energy for couples who want to live free before taking on the responsibilities of family, or for marriages of independent, outgoing couples, perhaps later in life who want to stretch their wings.

DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 20. CAPRICORN, the Goat. This serious, Saturn-ruled energy is all about ambition, recognition, climbing the ladder of success, and pinnacles of accomplishment. Energetic workaholics do well under this approval-seeking influence. Saturn also rules "time," so couples marrying under this sign may be in for the long haul, despite the personal hardships such an energy exacts. While most marriage vows do promise lifelong commitment, these days that's not often the case. In the words of a friend, it's "for better or for worse, but not for long." Perhaps marriages under Capricorn fare better than the statistics, I don't know. Often overlooked qualities which Saturn rules may help with stabilizing a marriage, and they are humor and the wisdom that comes with experience. This is a good sign for couples with worldly ambitions, whether they are just starting out or are second marriages with strong status values.

JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18. AQUARIUS, the Water-Bearer. Under this sign of friendship and long-term goals, partners with a compatible vision for life may find support for joint ventures and feeling as though they'd married their "best friend." Opposite to the personal expression of will in creative Leo, Aquarian marriages may be called to a higher purpose under God's will in selecting which goals they will work toward. Not emotionally rich like Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the temperature under Aquarius can be on the cool side, more like the mental Gemini and Libra. To others, Aquarian couples may appear aloof -- that is, until you get to know them and appreciate their dedication and drive. Couples with strong social, environmental, or other causes are well supported by this sign, as are those who are truly the best of friends.

FEBRUARY 18 - MARCH 20. PISCES, the Fish. Dreamy Pisces is as idealistic as Sagittarius, but in an even more mystical sense; as romantic as Libra, but in a more spiritual sense; and as service-oriented as Virgo, but in almost a religious, rather than duty-oriented sense. Pisces marriages find harmony being close to water or in the feeling of the partners flowing into and out of each other. If this all sounds like too far a reach for most humans, consider the down-side of this energy -- confusion, denial, deception and addiction. MARCH 20 - APRIL 20. ARIES, the Ram. Being born and daily re-born closely describes the feelings of "honeymooning," when each sees the other freshly and sex is enthusiastic. For couples with high sexual needs without the intensity of Scorpio, it is a good sign. For those more moderate in need for physical expression, it may become a burden which can rapidly turn to frustration and anger when not permitted the outlet. A master of new beginnings, one of Aries' challenges is seeing things through to the end. This works well for busy couples with few domestic and family goals, but is difficult when partially mowed lawns or incomplete projects littering the household get in the way of daily living.

APRIL 20 - MAY 21. TAURUS, the Bull. Our circle around the zodiac is completed in Taurus, an earthy and materialistic energy ruled by Venus in her more physical expressions. Like Aries, Taurus enjoys physical intimacy but is more suited to couples staying together for the long haul than Aries, as Taurus is a fixed and possessive sign. It has the kind of energy that, even if a marriage doesn't last on paper, it will be held onto in the heart (which sometimes isn't welcome in a new post-divorce relationship!). Taurus enjoys material comforts and thrives when partners express appreciation for each other with frequent complements and displays of affection. Sometimes high-maintenance financially, this sign is always high maintenance emotionally, for its need for continual affection and approval.

Finding one sign that supports or reflects all of life's stages seems improbable. But being realistic about yourself and your partner's qualities and values will help guide you to select the most appropriate marriage energy to start with.

There's another option, however, one which is increasing in popularity and for good reason ... the renewal of marriage vows. Mostly we hear of couples re-vowing out of love or because of a recent reconciliation after a time of trial. But you might think of renewing your vows as a way to 'adjust' your marriage energy to better match the changes that you both are moving through in various life stages.

Consider this: Renewal of vows essentially "re-starts" the marriage. Given what you have read about the influence of various signs, you can see how valuable this re-starting could prove to be.

For example, say you choose Capricorn as your wedding sign. You are both up-and-coming professionals who want to dedicate yourselves to building position and security for some years. Once you are ready to have children, you can renew your vows under Cancer or Leo. When the children are grown, a Gemini or Aquarian, Libran or Sagittarian renewal may then better suit your lifestyle.

The option to renew vows frees you from feeling locked in to just one marriage energy to live with and work with for a lifetime. It also feels like it better suits our changing lifestyles and the pace of living in today's world.

The Zodiac is an imaginary belt stretching about 9° north and 9° south of the eclipse within which the planets and the Moon remain in the course of their movement. In case of the Moon, the deviation from the ecliptic is about + 5°. This belt is divided into 12 equal parts each of 30° and each part is called a sign. According to the western system of Astrology, the first sign, i.e., Aries starts from the point of intersection of the ecliptic and the equator. Planets

The planets which, according to astrology, have the most powerful influence on the Earth are nine in number, namely, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. The last two are called the shadowy planets as they do not have physical or celestial bodies like the other planets. Of the two places where the moon crosses the ecliptic (that is, the path of the Sun), the north point is known as Rahu and the corresponding south point which is exactly 180° away from the former is called Ketu. In spite of the fact that they are not celestial bodies like other planets, they are very sensitive and effective points and it is on account of their powerful influence on the Earth, that our ancient savants of astrology have termed them as planets.

Movements and Motions of Planets

All the planets (Rahu and Ketu excepted) perform the double function of not only revolving on their own axes (from West to East), but also round the Sun. Saturn Is the most distant from the Earth. Eclipse of February 6, 2008 - Vedic Astrology

The solar eclipse on February 6, 2008 is one of the more interesting ones I have seen in a while. Not only will there be an eclipse at that time, but retrograde Mercury will be directly conjoined the sun and moon at the time it is eclipsed. Mercury will be closer to the Earth at that this time than he is at any other time, making him very powerful.

I see this Mercury retrograde as being good for Gemini and Virgo ascendants, if they're willing to take a chance -- especially in the occult areas of life, and especially for Geminis, who have had Mars back and forth in their first house for close to four months at this point. Were ever the sign of Gemini falls in your chart could see a release from this eclipse. For those with a Gemini ascendant, sidereal zodiac, this eclipse could declare a major reversal of recent frustrations for them. I say this because an eclipse is very powerful, and not necessarily for "bad things". It shows unusual events and generally will support a spiritual or otherworldly expression.

But in general, this eclipse is buttressed by a Sun/Saturn exchange. The sun is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn and Saturn is in Leo, ruled by the sun. This type of interaction is a powerful glue that tends to hold actions together, despite negative circumstances that may arise. Thus, the sign of Capricorn is also very activated by the eclipse. Those with a Capricorn ascendant, sidereal zodiac, must watch their health for the next six months. But those with the Capricorn ascendant who have had some health difficulties, may find some relief in the occult methods or some unexpected breakthroughs at this time.

Astrology Forecast for February 2008 - General Tendencies for All Sun Signs

February is going to be a month for changes with two eclipses and Mercury in retrograde... and so many holidays! We'll be ready for parties, we'll be ready for endings and beginnings, and we may run into many old friends along the way. The planets will be getting along well this month. There won't be any planetary squares and only one opposition towards the end of the month. There may be changes ahead, but most of them will not be too painful.

The month begins with Venus and Jupiter snuggling in Capricorn, and that could bring some unexpected pregnancies. It could also bring some financial prosperity.
Mercury and Neptune will also be singing together with Mars doing a little backup for them on Groundhog Day. We may have some very creative ideas, and the energy to make them real through Sunday, February 3rd.

Mercury will be in retrograde through the 18th, and this will definitely be a time for old friends -- some living, some gone. Always Mercury's retrograde is good for ghost hunting, but with Mercury doing the back swim in Aquarius, it will also be a time for hunting old friends. It will be a great time to reconnect with everybody, so if you are thinking of an old friend, go ahead and look them up.

We may really feel like dancing on Fat Tuesday, February 5th, with Venus and Uranus holding hands. The sun will also be moving to conjunct Mercury and the Moon for the solar eclipse. There could be all kinds of opportunities in love, money, science, travel, and just plain new ideas through the Chinese New Year (the year of the rat) on February 7th.

Our imaginations will be active and some of us may be quite inspired the weekend of February 9th with the Sun crossing Neptune. And, we will probably be ready to follow-through with some of those ideas through Thursday, February 14, Valentine's Day, as the Sun then moves to radiate Mars. We will be feeling very frisky for Valentine's Day, so get out and have some fun! It will be a great day for meeting new people.

Venus will be leaving Capricorn and crossing into Aquarius over the weekend of February 16th. We may be feeling like getting out of our caves and maybe visiting some friends.

Mercury will be at direct station on Monday, February 18th, Presidents' Day, the Sun will enter Pisces on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, February 20th, many of us will witness a full moon lunar eclipse in Virgo. Mercury will cause transportation and communication problems from the 17th through the 19th. The Sun will be winking at Pluto as it enters Pisces on the 19th. We will be feeling a deeper part of ourselves, and community groups could make some positive changes. Then the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse comes, making us wonder what really is important. Get ready! Some of us will be breaking up, and some of us will be making up. Some of us will be making money, some of us will be quitting our jobs. It will be a time for changes.

The weekend of February 23rd could bring some problems with authority figures with the Sun and Saturn at a standoff. Or, we may find ourselves back at the office working this weekend. But, things will become more artistic and pleasant by Tuesday, February 26th as Venus crosses Mercury. Things should be smooth sailing all the way through Leap Day, February 29th!

Some mystics of astrology recommend that you feed the moon symbolic "food" though your daily activities and according to your astrology aspects; and to talk to your inner-self, which they refer to as your lunar self. Others astrology experts recommend that the moon should be treated like an animal in a symbolic zoo; and that you should never feed it during your lifetime.

The moon is a symbol in astrology that relates to a functional feeling for the feminine principal that exists inside of everybody, regardless of gender. Every aspect of your personal lunar cycle affects a variety of symbolical things, including your astrology sun sign. The moon plays an essential part of astrological information when building an astrology chart; and it is included in your house and in your aspects (your "aspect" is the key to interpreting your astrology chart).

Do You Recognize Yourself In Your Sun Sign Description?

There are some people who, in all sincerity, look at the list of traits and qualities assigned to them by their astrological Sun Sign ... and say the description just doesn't fit them. Sure, some of them are smug and pleased to have confirmed their belief that astrology is a bunch of hokum, which is what they thought from the start. But others say rather wistfully, "I'm not a typical Libra," or "I must not be a real Pisces."

And in the tone of their voice I hear the disappointment of someone who really would like to explore the treasures astrology may offer, and understand themselves better through the wisdom astrology can provide. But they just can't stretch the description they have until it "fits" the selves they know they are. And I agree with them. In their case, astrology suffers from having been simplified into nonsense. There's lots more going on inside every one of us than can be covered by the cut-and-dried glibness of pop culture Sun Sign astrology. In fact, when you get right down to it very few people are "typical" examples of their Sun Sign traits.

This is because a complete horoscope (which is the complete astrological picture of a personality) is made up not of just Sun Sign qualities ... any more than "vanilla wafers" are made of just vanilla. When you bite into a cookie, you're experiencing the sugar, salt, baking soda, eggs, shortening, flour, milk ... and the vanilla ... that went into producing them. Leave the vanilla out ... and "something's missing." You can taste it in the different flavor. And that's just a simple example.

A horoscope is made up of ten planets, twelve signs, twelve houses, twelve possible placements for planets in those houses, and twelve different "sign on the cusp" arrangements for each of those houses. See how Sun Sign information can get watered until it's unrecognizable? And yet it will still be there -- as part of the person's character. Without it, he is somehow "not himself" ... just like the vanilla-less cookie.

Some astrologers say adding Moon Sign information along with Sun Sign descriptions would quiet some of the objections, and, yes, I agree that might help. But it's still incomplete. A Sun Sign description -- or even a Sun Sign / Moon Sign description -- is a gross condensation of a complex and unfolding story. Read the synopsis of a 2 hour movie ... and, yes, you've got the gist of the story, but, wow, have you ever missed out on the grand encounter that a well--made film can deliver. You can't begin to experience the characters, the plot, the emotion, the theme, or the message the film-makers wanted to provide by reading a one-to-three sentence summary.

I must also note that free will and social conditioning play a huge part in what people eventually become -- what they make of the raw materials they began life with when they took their first breath and their horoscope -- mapped by the placement of the Sun, Moon, and planets -- described the qualities of their emerging self. In fact, one of astrology's greatest gifts can be to return to you the knowledge of how you were designed to operate and the person you were born to be. People make choices not in alignment with their true selves all the time. And then they wonder why their lives are an empty, unfulfilling mess.

So, in fairness, let's note that the same free will that can work for you can also work against you. You can use creative ingenuity and the decision to do things differently to dig yourself out of a circular problem -- or repetitive character pattern. But you can also make deliberate choices to use your energy and apply your abilities that just dig you deeper into unfortunate, self-sabotaging habits.

It is absolutely possible for people to pervert, repress, and disown their essential being, just as it's possible for people to squander, ignore, and fail to develop the qualities and talents they brought with them when they arrived. People take the elements of their character and make choices about what to do with them. Not everybody born on Bill Gates' birthday is a gazillionaire ... and not every soul with the same elements that came with Adolf Hitler turned their lives into a synonym for mass murder.

So if you were at one time taught to repress your self-assertiveness or deny your creativity ... and you keep on doing that year after year ... when someone tells you these things are abundant resources in your character, you may honest-to-goodness not believe it. That doesn't make it any less true -- and being told something about yourself you've always secretly believed but never dared test can be an amazing gift, liberating beyond words. I've seen it happen again and again. It's like witnessing a new birth. In fact, it's exactly that!!

The Eclipses Are Coming - Inspirations Long Forgotten Coming Back

Eclipses usually come in twos, a solar and a lunar, but occasionally we will get three in a row. We have 2 sets of 2 eclipses coming in 2008, 2 in February and 2 more in August. We've had eclipses bouncing around in Virgo and Pisces for almost the past 2 years. We have one more on February 20, and then Virgo, Pisces, you are done with changes for about 8 years. This year it will be Leo and Aquarius living through the dynamic process.

Eclipses bring changes good and bad. Solar eclipses are usually new beginnings, and Lunar eclipses represent endings. Where these eclipses occur on our natal charts tell us how they will affect us personally. An eclipse is about 10 times more powerful than a full moon or a new moon. So, if you have a tendency to go ballistic on the full moon anyhow, you may want to check into the psych ward ahead of time (just kidding, but you get my drift). If the eclipse is near your birthday, there could be some big changes in store for you for the whole year following your birthday.

The solar eclipse on February 6 will have the greatest visibility from southern Australia and Antarctica, so if you have some extra vacation time and money, Australia would be the place to be. For the rest of us, it will feel like a very powerful New Moon, and you know what to do on the New Moon... Write that wish list. Wishes and goals are extremely powerful on the New Moon. This Solar eclipse in Aquarius will also be conjunct with Mercury in retrograde. Solar eclipses are for new beginnings, and Mercury retrograde brings up the past. It will be an excellent time to connect with an old friend, or maybe start doing something you used to do, like exercise. It is also an excellent time to launch a new business or a new project.

The lunar eclipse on February 20 will be visible for the eastern half of North America, and it will occur at 10:26 PM eastern time. Lets hope for a clear night, so we can watch it. Pluto will be shaking hands with our Sun-Moon opposition that night, and that means even more powerful transformations. The Moon with be in the earth sign of Virgo and the sun in watery Pisces. But, with Pluto in the mix, when we blend these planets, we will not get mud. We will get enlightenment. It will be a great time to make some healthy changes in our lives. Those of us in therapy, may find that we make some quantum leaps during this eclipse. It will also be a great time to destroy things. Ready to do some early spring cleaning? Some of us in rocky relationships will decide its time to call it quits. We may even quit that miserable job.

Now its time to look at your natal chart and see how the eclipses will affect you. The solar eclipse on February 6 will be at 18 degrees Aquarius. Any planets between 16 and 20 degrees in Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo, or Taurus, will find this eclipse rather stressful, but any planets between 16 and 20 degrees in Libra and Gemini will be more positively influenced. The lunar eclipse on February 20 will be at 1 degree Virgo. Any planets at 29 degrees in Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Taurus, or any planets between 0 and 3 degrees in Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini are going to be stressed by the lunar eclipse. But, any planets at 29 degrees Sagittarius or Aries, or any planets between 0 and 3 degrees in Capricorn and Taurus will have a positive outcome. Also check your houses to see where the eclipses will be occurring. They will help determine what area of the of your life will be affected by the eclipses.

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius - Flashes from the Past

Astrologers pay more attention to Mercury's retrograde more than any other planet. When a planet is in retrograde, it appears to be moving backwards across the sky. Planets cannot change the direction of their orbit, they only look that way because the Earth is not the center of the solar system. All the planets except the Sun and the Moon go retrograde at some time, in fact, the outer planets are retrograde almost as much as they are moving direct. But, Mercury's retrograde is the one we like to pay attention to, because it happens so often (3 - 4 times a year), and because it is so close to us.

Mercury will be doing his back swim in the unpredictable sign of Aquarius this time. Mercury in a normal situation in Aquarius can bring brilliant thoughts and unexpected shortcuts when traveling. But, with Mercury in retrograde, he's going to make us think and travel to the past. Friends are important to Aquarius, so there is a very good chance on connecting with old friends. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, and he is the mad scientist, so some of us may find ourselves fixing things we should have fixed a long time ago. If your car or any machine you own (especially your computer) is due for repair, get it done before the retrograde starts. If not, Mercury could cause it to fail completely.

The most difficult periods during any planet's retrograde are the times where it is changing directions. There could be some communication or transportation problems on January 28 while Mercury is at retrograde station, and on February 18 while he is at direct station. Leave yourself extra time and double check communications on those days.

Neptune, the Sun, and the Moon, will pass Mercury during his retrograde from February 2 through February 6. That could liven things up quite a bit. Ghost hunting becomes easier while Mercury is retrograde and Neptune is the ruler of the occult. These 4 days would be an excellent time to communicate with past over loved ones, and for psychic readings, especially readings about past losses. Want to find out if your ex is coming back? This would be an excellent time to ask. In fact this would be an excellent time for him/her to show up.

Mercury will be quiet on Valentine's Day. He will still be moving backward, but he won't be having any problems. Hopefully we will have lots of fun this Valentine's Day, unlike last year when he turned retrograde on February 13th.

Mercury's retrograde will be from 24 degrees to 8 degrees in Aquarius. Now its time to check your natal chart. Obviously if you have any planets between 8 and 24 degrees in Aquarius, this retrograde will impact you. If you have any planets between 8 and 24 degrees in Scorpio, Leo, or Taurus, there will be a few days that Mercury may curse you. If you have any planets between 22 to 26 degrees in Scorpio, Leo, or Taurus, the day of the retrograde station, January 28, could be especially difficult. And, if you have any planets between 6 and 10 degrees in the same signs, the day of direct station, February 18, may give you lots of problems. Look and see what houses Mercury will be traveling through in your chart to determine what areas of your life Mercury will enhance.

How To Make Sure Your Maximize Your Wealth Luck In 2008

We are about 3 weeks away from the year of Earth Rat. The Earth Rat year officially starts on the 4th February. Do you want to have more wealth this year? If you are looking to improving your wealth luck, then I suggest you read every word of this article.

You will look at your house first. Whoever that is occupying the East sector of your house will be very prosperous this year. How do you know where is the East sector? It is very simple. You just need a compass.

With your compass, stand in the center of your house and determine where is the East. Divide your entire house into 9 sectors, 3 by 3. Standing at the center of your house, you will be able to determine which room is in the East sector. Whoever that occupies the room in the East sector will have a prosperous 2008.

OK, I can hear you asking. . . "What if my room is not in the East sector?"

If your room is not in the East sector, you still stand a chance. You will still feel the effect of the Wealth Star if your room door is facing East. That is, if you stand in the center of your room, and your room door is at the East, you will still feel the effect of the Wealth Star.

Your next question is probably "What if my door is also not at the East?"

In that case, then you have to activate the East corner of your room. There are a few ways to do that. . .

1. You can put an electric fan there and turn on the fan, so that the energy moves.

2. You can put your cell phone charger at the East corner of your room.

3. Put 8 fishes in a bowl there.

4. Place your television at the East corner.

Now, there is one family member in the household, who will be very prosperous this year. Do you know who is it?

Basing on the I-Ching, the East represents the eldest son of the household. This year, if you are the eldest son in your household, then congrats, your wealth luck will be very good.

Let me make my point clearer. This only applies if you are staying with your parents. If you are staying with your parents under the same roof, then the East corner represents you, if you are the eldest son. If you are staying alone, or with your children, then you become the father of the household.

If this case, your corner is the Northwest corner. If you are staying with your children, then your eldest son will be prosperous this year.

The Truth Behind Friday The 13th

How was your last Friday the 13th? That was on the 13th July 2007. Was it an unlucky day for you?

I first experienced Friday the 13th being an unlucky day 18 years ago. In fact, I did not know that Friday the 13th was supposed to be unlucky. That day seemed normal until...

I realised that I lost my workbook. I was supposed to hand up my workbook assignment, but I could not. As a result, I received 10 strokes of the ruler from the teacher. I kept searching for my workbook, but could not find it. I had to buy a new workbook and copy everything all over again.

The next unlucky thing that happened was falling into the drain and injuring myself. It was during a soccer game that I was forced to participate in. It was an order from the physical education teacher that everyone had to join in the game. I was hopeless in soccer as I could not even control the ball properly.

During the game, I slipped, fell into the drain and injured myself. After that, a classmate of mine told me it was Friday the 13th and was supposed to be unlucky.

Since then, I was very careful about Friday the 13ths. I have learnt my lesson then. But surprisingly, the subsequent Friday the 13ths were not that bad after all. What happened?

Since that day 18 years ago, I have went through numerous Friday the 13ths. But I went through them smoothly.

As I came to know more about chinese astrology, I realized that you need to calculate the elements before you can tell if a day is going to be lucky or unlucky for you. If that day is full of favorable elements for you, then it is going to be a good day for you. And vice versa.

In Astrology, the Moon represents your emotions, your inner self, your instincts, habits, and reactions. The sign it occupied when you were born is your Moon Sign in your horoscope. Your Moon Sign describes character traits, feelings, and personal responses that are very familiar to you. In fact, it's common for people to relate to their Moon Sign qualities far more than their Sun Sign characteristics when finally they learn, through research, by having their Natal Chart interpreted, or simply by accident what their Moon Sign IS ... and what it describes in their personality.

Astrologers consider the Moon one of the three most essential elements in any horoscope -- along with the Sun and the Ascendant. To some, the Sun is the most important citizen in the celestial map. Others consider Moon sign information the missing dimension in Sun Sign Astrology -- and that its absence is a big reason why some people say Astrology doesn't work. The First House

The first house reveals the sign rising on the horizon when you are born. The sign is also called the ascendant sign. It must be noted that all horoscopes have to be converted to the Greenwich Mean Time. Since Astrology is based on exact Mathematical calculations and measurements, the conversion of the date of birth of each client to a common denominator has to be done very carefully and accurately.

All events are connected by Time, all places are connected by Space and all effects are connected by Cause in the Space-Time-Causality equation. The Science of Time (Astrology) and the Science of Cause (Transcendental Philosophy) assume great significance in the realm of superconscient learning.

The Elements Used in the Computation of Time

The main element used is the Sun itself. One solar day is the time taken by the earth to rotate around its own axis. One solar day is made up of 24 solar hours, one solar hour is sixty minutes and one minute is sixty seconds.

The time taken by Sol to make a circuit of the Zodiac from the First Point of the Sidereal Zodiac is called a Sidereal Year. This is 365.25363 solar days. A Tropical Year is the time taken by the Sun to make a circuit of the Tropical Zodiac This is 365.242194 solar days.

The Five Types of Years

There are five types of years
1) Solar Year

2) Jupiterian Year

3) Savana Year

4) Lunar Year

5) Sideral Year

Solar Year

The time taken by Sol (Sun) to cross one degree is called a solar day. When the Sun crosses from one Sign to another, this is called Surya Sankrama (transit to another sign). The time taken from one Surya Sankrama to another is called one solar month. The motion of the Sun is fastest at the first week of January and is slowest at the first week of July. In other words, since the Sun's motion is fastest in the Vedic months of Sagittarius and Capricorn, it takes only 29 days for the Sun to traverse 30 degrees of Sag and Cap. Conversely, it takes 32 days for Sol to traverse 30 degrees of Cancer, since his motion is slowest at Apogee, in the Vedic month of Cancer.

Jupiterian Year (Barhaspathya)

One Barhaspathya is time taken by Jove (Jupiter) to traverse 30 degrees of a sign. The duration is 361 days and a Jupiterian Cycle is roughly 12 years.

Savana Year

One Savana day is reckoned from Sunrise to Sunrise. 30 such Savana day is called one Savana month. 360 such days is one Savana year.

Lunar Year

A lunar month is the time calculated from one New Moon to the next New Moon. Since during a solar year, 12 Full Moon were visible , the Zodiac was divided into 12 constellations. 12 Lunar months constitute one Lunar Year. This is 354.367 days. This is 11 days less than the solar year.

Sidereal Year

One sidereal day is time taken by Luna to traverse a constellation of 13 degrees and 20 minutes. The Moon takes 27.3 days to revolve around the earth. 27.3*12 is one Sidereal Year and it is 327.6 days.

Apparent Solar Day (Savana Dina)

The time taken by the earth to rotate around its own axis. From a geocentric perspective, the Sun moves one degree per day.

Sidereal Day (Nakshatra Dina)

This is the time taken by the earth to rotate around its own axis with regard to Sidereus, the constellation of fixed stars. This is 23 hours and 56 mins and 4.0953 seconds.

An apparent Solar Day is 24 hours. According to Indian Astronomy, a solar day is 60 Nadis. 60 Vinadis is one Nadi (Nazhika) and 60 Tatparas is one Vinadi. There are minuter subdivisions like Pratatparas (60 Pratatparas constitute one Tatpara), corresponding to micro seconds and nano seconds in Western time calculations. 2 and a half Nadis is one hour or 24 minutes is one Nadi.

While as per Western calculations, a day is reckoned from midnight to midnight, an Indian day is reckoned from sunrise to sunrise and a Hijra day is calculated from sunset to sunset.

Sidereal Solar Year

The time taken by the Sun (from a geocentric perspective), to make a circuit of the Sidereal Zodiac . This is 365 days, 6 hours 9 minutes and 9.8 seconds.

Tropical Solar Year

This is the time taken by the Sun to make a circuit of the Tropical Zodiac. This is 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes and 45.2 seconds. This is 20 minutes and 24.6 seconds less. This is because the First Point of Aries moves 50.3 seconds per year.

Sidereal Period of the Moon

The time taken by Luna to make a circuit of the Sidereal Zodiac. This is 27 days 7 hours 43 minutes 11.5 seconds.

Synodic Period

SP is the the time between 2 successive conjunctions. For the Moon, it is the time taken from New Moon to New Moon.

Solar Month & the Laws of Planetary Motion

SM is the time taken by the Sun to traverse one Sign. The motion of the Sun is fastest at Perigee (near the earth) and slowest at Apogee (away from the Earth). This is the Earth-in-reflex, as it is the earth which is moving and not the Sun).

In other words, the motion of the earth is fastest at Perihelion and slowest at Aphelion. During the sidereal months of Sagittarius and Capricorn, the Sun is nearest to the earth. It takes only 29 days to traverse 30 degrees of a sign. During the months of Gemini and Cancer, the Sun is away from the earth and it takes 31.477 days for the Sun to traverse 30 degrees of a sign. The slowest motion of the Sun is 57 minutes and 11 seconds. The fastest motion of the Sun is 61 minutes 10 seconds. That is why some Sagittarius and Capricorn (Vedic months) have 29 days and Cancer and Gemini (Vedic months) have 32 days, as per the Vedic Calender.

The orbit of a planet is always elliptical, with the Sun as the focus of the ellipse. (Suryaha Jagata Chakshu).

The orbital period of a planet (Bhagana Kala) bears relationship to the Madhyama Manda Karna (Semi-major axis) of the planet. (O P = MMK^1.5). (These principles, discovered by Aryabhata, Bhaskara & Brahmagupta earlier were rediscovered in the West by Kepler as the Laws of Planetary Motion. )
Kali Era & Kali Day

The beginning of the Kali Era was 3102 BC, February 18 on a Friday. Then the First Tropical & Sidereal Points were in 0 degrees Beta Arieties (Aswini . All planets were in the same point at that time. If you add 3102 to the English era, you get the Kali Era. Ahargana is the elapsed Kali day number, the days elapsed from the start of the Kali Era. If you divide Ahargana by 7 and find the modulus, you can know the day of the week. If the remainder is one, it is Saturday, if it is two, it is Sunday and so on.

Day of the Week = Ahargana%7 (% is the modulus operator in Foxpro)

Njattu Vela

The constellation tenanted by the Sun is called Njattu Velu. In a day, the Sun traverses less than one degree (less 59.13 seconds). Sol takes 13,14 days to traverse 13 degrees 20 minutes and so the duration of a Njattu Vela is 13, 14 days.

Njattu Velas are important from the perspective of Agriculture. Karthika Njattu Vela is the time when the Sun transits the constellation of Karthika & Thiruvathira Njattu Vela is the time when the Sun transits the constellation of Aridra (Thiruvathira). Aridra, Karthika, Chothi and Chitra Njattuvelas give plenty of rains and farmers use this time productively.
